Obstacle 23: Criticism

“Sandwich every bit of criticism between two layers of praise.” ~Mary K. Ash

Criticism creates crisis.  Nothing kills hope faster than criticism.  Caustic words wound. The acidic nature of a critical tongue has the potential to breakdown the staunchest optimist.  Realistically, not everything someone does is laudable, but champions know how to affirm others through the use of constructive feedback.

The tendency to criticize and then at best apologize is damaging. Yet this pattern is so standardized today that it seems almost reflexive. Something is wrong with this destructive cycle.  The better approach is to offer words that are thoughtfully spoken.

Offer corrections along with examples or suggestions for improvement and be sure to acknowledge that which is good.  Seek or give honest feedback, but shun criticism.  Unsolicited criticism is arrogant.

Use a modest tongue.  Any situation is correctable. The best solution is governed by its tone.

Praise.

Opportunity Step: Practice praise today.
