Obstacle 99: Tradition

“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds. Be rid of tradition.” ~Bob Marley

Tradition tempers originality. Maintaining tradition has its place. Learning from the past has its value. Even so, some traditions or mores need to be abandoned or modified for the sake of progress.  You have to move on.

Status-quo, tradition, can be a devious form of escapism. If tradition evokes stagnant complacency, it is time to jump-start your thinking. From the perspective of what is, begin to think about “what if?”

What if…I publish a book? What if…I open a business? What if …I move to a different job or location? The what ifs confront tradition. They allow you to break through stale boundaries. You get to challenge the norm, your imagination inspires new, exciting successes.

“Live out of your imagination, not your history.” ~Stephen Covey

See new things. Ask what if? Ask why or why not? Break the restriction of tradition. Normalcy is often boring. Get excited, be courageous.
